A Little...Homemade Detergent Part 1

Our family is currently trying to cut our expenses. In our adventures of trying to become more frugal, we have gathered many tips and tricks from friends, family, and of course the internet. I recently became aware of the idea of making my own detergent. When I told my family what I was up to, most of them said I was crazy. So I figured out I must be on to something. After further googling the subject...I came up with the best recipe.

Here it is:

1 bar Fels Naptha soap, grated
1 cup Borax
1 cup Washing Soda
1/4 cup Oxyclean (optional)
All ingredients can be found on the laundry aisle of your local grocery store (I know for a fact Smith's carrries all of them). Mix all ingredients together. Add 1 tablespoon to each load of laundry. (Sometimes I add 2 tablespoons for very soiled loads).

And the results are fantastic!! My clothes are just as clean as when I used Tide and smell fabulous. I don't have a front loading washer, but I hear it also works well with those machines, as it is low sudsing.

And the best part...I am paying less than 10% than I used to when I was buying store bought detergent. Now that's a little great!! Something else I've discovered in being frugal....there is no need to use an entire dryer sheet for each load. I cut mine in thirds and it does the same job a full sheet does. Happy laundry!!

I use this same recipe, have you tried the dishwasher detergent? Just as awesome. :)

Have been wanting to do this for a long time. Great!

Another way that works (I use the same recipe, too), is to microwave the soap for 1 minute will puff up and look like merengue. Let it cool and break it up into your food processor. Pulse with a cup of one of the dry ingredients until powdery and then mix with everything else.

I would love an update in a month or two. I used this recipe but didn't have the same outcome. At first I liked it but my clothes eventually became stiff and heavily faded and my whites became dingy in the areas your skin rubs most. The difference may be that I have front loading appliances, but I would still be interested to see if it lasts for you. Maybe I won't spring for front loading next time!

The dish washer detergent is coming up. I have been using this recipe about 3 months now and haven't had any problems. I'll have to try the microwave trick.
