Ok, a little more about my love of Easter...
I started this Easter Egg dying tradition about four years ago and I love it! Hope you do too! I have never seen another way to get beautiful, ornate patterns on eggs... and it's easy too. Now, every year I go to the thrift store and pick up five or six ties for dying eggs. So fun!

A Little Birthday... The Birth of A Little Great
We have been around now over a year! Happy birthday to A Little Great. Our first year has been a lot great, thanks to our incredible readers.
In celebration, I thought it appropriate to re-post the very first A Little Great post, about how this blog came to be... (Originally published 12.30.2009)
In Kindergarten, Corinne wore extra thick yarn in her long pigtails. She seemed to specialize in sweatshirts; I thought they were so cool. We had crushes on all the same boys; we could both name them to this day.
It went on like that until the second grade when they figured out Corinne was… umm, “advanced” and skipped her into the third grade; leaving poor non-genius me behind. We continued to be friends, though there were times we were “secret friends” so her older friends wouldn’t know. I knew what she was up to but I nodded and agreed, whatever.
During elementary school we were all about cat’s cradle, hand slapping games, plastic charm necklaces, and Sea Breeze. We would have sleepovers and stay up as long as we could styling My Little Ponies hair. The next day we would don matching tee shirts and head to the mall, via public transportation, for kiosk makeup applications and photo booth. People would sometimes ask is we were sisters and that really amused us. Whenever I got the chance I would point out that I was older, four days older to be exact.
Our friendship lasted the through jr. high years and into high school. We carpooled. Our moms dropped us of nearly my entire sophomore, her junior, year. Sometimes we could get an older friend to drive; that was cool. We went to dances in the same groups, sometimes. Our groups of friends started to meld together.
And so on to higher education. We went our separate ways but always stayed in contact and hung out in the summers. There was one summer we got on a wedding crashing kick. We’d go to a popular wedding reception venue and go from reception to reception helping ourselves to the cake and eyeing the single men. I always made it a point to wear a skirt that was just a little too short for added amusement.
Then there was the time she got her tonsils out at the same time I got my wisdom teeth out. It was like it had been planned in heaven. We were both heavily medicated and watching movies that were supposed to be sad but we laughed the way you only do with a great friend.
We got married within a few months of each other. I had recently completed my Bachelor’s and Corinne was already working on her PhD. I wore a black sequined sweater to her wedding; so ugly. It’s still in my closet and I cannot bring myself to throw it out.
Children have blessed both of our lives. We each have two. When we can we meet for dinner and a movie. We sit and talk and laugh for hours afterwords until our husbands start to text.
There are many things I am grateful for. There are many people who I love. There are many times that I think about how much I appreciate great friends. I have two friends whom I have had all my life. Two friends that I know will always be there. Two friends I trust explicitly. And Corinne is one of them.
This blog is the product of our desire to share a little of ourselves and what we think is great with our fellow women.

Aly and Corinne
We never really met, at least not that we can remember. It all began at Jazzercise class in 1978, or so. Our mothers were trying to lose their baby weight from their fifth, not an easy task. The class took place in the local church. Our first memories of each other are of playing in the back of the exercise class. It’s really all a blur of leotards over bike shorts, sleeves to the elbow and gathers between the bust. We sat and played with our few toys and ran unsupervised through the hallways. The memories go on from there. In Kindergarten, Corinne wore extra thick yarn in her long pigtails. She seemed to specialize in sweatshirts; I thought they were so cool. We had crushes on all the same boys; we could both name them to this day.

A Little Crafty... Amazing Fabric!
I am always, always in the market for some ridiculously awesome fabric and it would seem that I have hit the jackpot!
How about these...
Or these...
I can't stop...
It's about time to replace my throw pillows on my couch. These are some I have my eye on!
I am in love! How about you? You can find so much more on Tonic Living.

A Little Style... Online Sample Sales
I am guilty, guilty, guilty of loving online samples sales. I am a serious deal hunter and I have found many a great deal on these sites. So I thought I would share. You can find what I have recently scored on online sample sales on my Style Blog.
I don't know how they do it, but it is like TJ Maxx on steroids. They feature everything from home goods to baby clothes, beautiful things for you, and even for your man.
Personally, I super-love HauteLook.com and I shop it so very often. But there are several other options.
So how do you shop on these sites? It can be a little confusing so please allow me to give you a few pointers.
1. Sign up. You have to register to get the deals sent to you daily. I don't usually like to sign up for things either, but in this case I make an exception.
2. Be patient. To find the best deals you have to willing to check back often. New sales are introduced daily.
3. Act fast. In many cases the deals will be so good that you have to shop fast! Sizes and styles go quickly sometimes. When it comes to shopping on these sites you might not have the luxury of sleeping on it.
4. Have fun. I have more fun shopping on these types of sites than... well... anywhere else. I love the thrill of the hunt and an awesome bargain.
5. Denim sizing. Shoes, tops and accessories are easy. But be careful when it comes to jeans because they all fit differently. However, items are almost always returnable. My suggestions is to know what size you wear in the brand of jeans before you purchase. On HauteLook they let you know which sales are upcoming.
Go forth and save!

A Little Best Thing Ever... Snowcones
There is a bounty of new snow outside today! What to do? You could head down to the sledding hill (brrr). Or you could pretend you're in the tropics and stay inside!
Start with a bowl of fresh snow.
Add flavoring syrup. You can find it in the coffee isle of the grocery store.
Add a little heavy cream (you'll be glad you did).
So fun and delicious! Even our husbands, who thought we were crazy, loved 'em!
Thanks to my darling friends, Tami and Jenny, who invented these with me! You girls are the best!

A Little Christmas... Gift Idea
Having a hard time deciding what to give friends and neighbors this year? Well, I love steamed milk with delicious flavoring. But they could also use this with coffee, chocolate milk, hot cocoa... so yummy. The milk frother makes it "so coffee house". Your friends will thank you for saving them four bucks a pop at Starbucks.
Now, go spread some Holiday Cheer!

A Little Hilarious... Photofunia
It was my husband's birthday recently and my brother gave him the funniest card. It was a photo of a man reading a magazine and on the cover of the magazine was my husband's face. When I asked him how he did it, he directed me to Photofunia.
All you need is a well-lit frontal photo of your face (and a few minutes to spare).
My photo:
My photos after Photofunia:
Hilarious! I don't really the resemblance between the Spinx and myself... but oh well.

A Little Charity... The Fresh Air Fund
I was contacted by The Fresh Air Fund. They were hoping I would share a little about their cause with the A Little Great readers.
Basically, they allow underprivileged inner-city children to spend two weeks in the county. I'll admit, it didn't sound all that donation worthy to me at first. But then I watched this video...
And this one too...
Tell me that didn't stir a tear or two? I have always taken the great outdoors for granted. This is an amazing opportunity for these children. And definitely a good cause.

A Little Practicality... Useful Chirstmas Gifts
Here comes Santa Claus! I don't know about you, but I really battle my practical side when it comes to Christmas shopping. I want to get my kids awesome things they will love, but I don't want a basement full of worthless toys! In fact, one more toy might just put me over the edge ;).
So here are a few gifts your kiddos will actually get some use out of (and they won't make you nuts).
Kids Backpacks
Your kids go to school, sleepovers at Grandma's, play dates, they can always use a backpack. This one is cute.
Kid-sized Tables and Chairs
My kids have Lack Side Tables from IKEA in their rooms. They sturdy and come in all sorts of colors and only cost $8. I pair it with a couple $8 kid stools, also IKEA. See it in my little boy's room.
A Journal
They can work on their handwriting and syntax while chronicling their lives. Get one featuring a design to fit their personality. My daughter loves horses.
Educational Toys
Of course, Christmas isn't all that practical. Toys are inevitable. But who says they can't be fun and educational? Like these...
And these...
Merry Christmas!

A Little Jewelry... Gemvara
One of our amazing sponsors just happens to be Gemvara.
What is Gemvara you ask? Only a super fun customizable jewelry website! And if you know me, I am a total sucker for jewelry. It is my Christmas tradition to receive a piece of jewelry from my husband (this also applies to Mother's Day and the birth of a child). Last year I got some beautiful pave-style diamond earrings. I can't help but stare at them in the mirror every time I put them on. They make me giddy!
Mine kinda look like these...
What makes Gemvara so fun, other than the fact that anything dealing with jewelry is just plain fun, is that you can "customize" your selections. Let's just say that I am in the mood for a necklace featuring my son's birthstone and initial...
BAM! Isn't this fun! These cute initial necklaces come is pretty much any stone and any initial. What a great idea for a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law.
And there is still so much more to see. How about this ring (which closely resembles one that I own and love) set with black diamonds? It is called the "Quintessence Ring." I don't know about you but I love a simple, elegant ring. This would look great on my right, or my left, hand. Confession: I have four different rings that I wear as wedding rings.
Need more gift ideas? They have a Top Ten Gift Ideas page just for you! My favorite is the Rich and Thin Eternity Band. Wouldn't it be fun in your birthstone? Especially if diamonds are your birthstone, (wink wink).
Or you could strategically email this link to your husband (subtle hint) Really Romantic Gifts. You know we have to spell it out for them! This is my favorite... the Feel the Love Dog Tag. It actually spells out (pun intended) the word "LOVE" in braille. And, like every item on the site, you get to customize the gems. I like black diamonds best.
Here are some more of my absolute favorites...
Citrine Racetrack Ring
Skeleton Key Pendant
Initial Pendant
Renaissance Band
Love Notes Necklace (actually opens to hold a personal note)
Now if that doesn't put you (and me) in the mood for Christmas shopping, I don't know what will! HO, HO, HO.
Gemvara is a sponsor of A Little Great. However, all the opinions stated in and the content of this post are expressly mine.

A Little Crafty... Build a Memo Board
But not just any memo board, a stainless steel memo board!
I built this memo board to go next to my stainless fridge, I love it for it's look and it's functionality. What a great hand-made Christmas gift idea. Am I right or am I right?
Here is how to make it...
I first purchased the stainless memo board itself from IKEA. Then I visited my friendly neighborhood Home Depot where I choose my molding and had the guy cut it for me to fit around the board, which I brought with me, perfectly. He was happy to help me :).
I came home and started putting it together. I used this corner clasp that the Home Depot guy recommended (thanks guy). It was a life saver. Then I used a little wood glue and some staples to secure the corners. I then used caulk to fill in the seams. However, if I could go back I would use Spackle, because you can sand Spackle and you can't sand caulk.
Then I painted it to match my kitchen cupboards.
I then simply laid the frame over the board (it fit perfectly). Thanks again Home Depot Guy!
Then, using wood glue, I attached an unused, laminated map (that I just had laying around) to the back in order to ensure that the board and the stay together. You could also use poster board... but waste not, want not, right?
Then I cut the map with a razor blade so it was glued to both the molding and the memo board but wasn't visible from the front.
I used my favorite home decorating product ever to hang them, 3M Picture Hangers. If you haven't tried them you really must. I love that they don't leave holes in the walls and they are easily repositionable and removable.
Now I use China Markers to write the things I don't need erase (like days of the week) and dry erase markers for everything else. I even color code it... husband=green, me=red, daughter=pink, etc. It makes it easy to keep track of what is going on around here.
Did I mention it's magnetic? There are so many great things you could do with this project! What will you do?
