A Little Shopping... Black Friday Strategies

It’s the one-day marathon that shopping fanatics look forward to all year long, and it’s almost here.  And with every major retailer advertising unbeatable bargains this Black Friday, how do you know where the best deals really are?

Service strategist John Tschohl, author of The Customer is Boss, offers these suggestions to make Black Friday a little bit more manageable:

·         Know exactly what you want, because the best deals are in very limited supplywhich is why you should never enter a store and just be “window shopping.”  Have a detailed list of everything you want to get.  To save valuable time, make sure you know ahead of time the differences in models, if you need to purchase any add-ons or accessories and always have a backup store if your first stop runs out.
·         Getting online is not enough.  While many shoppers will find some incredible deals online, many retailers are offering even more special discounts to those consumers who follow them via social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.  Make sure you’re following all the stores you plan to visit.
·         Times are changing.  It used to be 6am, 4am, and then Midnight, and now we’re seeing more stores opening Thanksgiving night.  Don’t only know what time your favorite stores are open, but those blowout prices on hot-ticket items are sometimes only good during certain times.  Walmart, for example, might open at 10pm, but the big midnight madness deals on electronics don’t start for another two hours.
·         Don’t go it alone.  The competition will be fierce, so take the team approach.  Shop with a spouse or friend.  While you tackle one area of the store, your shopping companion can hit a different department within the store.
·         Don’t forget about Small Business Saturday.  Many people don’t know about this 2nd annual event to support small businesses on the busiest shopping weekend of the year, but everyone should check it out as many smaller stores in local communities across the country will be participating and offering some incredible deals. On this same note, don’t forget about Cyber Monday for some incredible online deals.
·         If you don’t get the deals you want on Black Friday, wait.  Retailers usually run special sales the first two weeks of December.  Prices generally go up closer to Christmas for those who wait until the last minute.  If you’re eyeing something for yourself, many retailers also run deeply discounted after Christmas sales to reduce their inventories.

Hope you can use these tips from John Tschohl.

A Little Organization...Grocery Shopping

Grocery List
photo:  oswaldadventures

One of my least favorite things to do as a housewife is the grocery shopping!  I like to make my trips to the grocery store as few as possible in a months period and when I do go I like to be in and out as fast as possible (remember I have 3 kids and I almost always have at least 2 of them with me while grocery shopping).  I was talking to my friend the other day telling her how sometimes I see people looking at my computer typed grocery list and they giggle out loud.  She asked why I type up my list and I told her it was because I like to keep my list in groups: ie. all the fruits together, diary, frozen foods etc.  That way I can go up and down each aisle and not have to make a second trip down an aisle as I get further down my list.  That's when she pulled this out of her purse (she was headed to the store right after we were together).
Isn't this a great idea?!  Everything is done by categories.  This list consists of things she most often shops for.  You can change it to suit your grocery needs, print off and off you go to the store.

Click here to download an excel file of the above grocery list.  Enjoy!

A Little Style... Retro-Style Swim Suits

I love the retro, pin-up girl, curvy look.  Since I am planning on giving birth one of these days (pray for me) and I also plan on taking advantage of the neighborhood pool... even with the baby weight, I was shopping online today for some suits that might work for my post-baby figure.  Mind you, I am not in the least bit "curvy" normally (sigh) so it's almost like a little treat to get to wear a suit that may require some... ah... curves.
Here are some of my faves.  Which are on your shopping list?  Oh, and if you have seen any around, be a pal and post a link in the comments!  (Just click on the pic to shop.)

This one is pretty nifty... you can wear it three different ways.

So conservative!  Those of you who know me and have actually seen me at the neighborhood pool are wondering what's going on.  Has Aly turned over a new leaf?  Click Read More to see the suit I really want...

A Little Style... Cynthia Vincent for Target

The Cynthia Vincent line for Target isn't supposed to arrive until the 18th.  But look what I happened upon at my local store yesterday.  I snatched these babies up so fast!  I am wearing them right now, as you can see, and they are comfy!  They have a great padded sole and they don't flop around on your feet at all.
The only bummer is that you can't find them online... yet.
Here's more from this much anticipated line...

Friday

A Little Style... One Outfit... Better Price!

Candace sent me an email asking me to find her this look for less.
All together, this outfit costs: $1,278 ($416 for the jacket alone!)

Thanks for asking me to shop for you Candace!  I love when other people buy cute stuff almost as much as I love buying it myself.  Besides, I really needed something to do while pretending to watch March Madness!
So here it is...

A Little Style... Style and Savings

By Aly
No doubt you have noticed that the economy is down and money is a little tight these days. Below are three important questions to ask yourself when deciding to purchase an item.

1. Do I LOVE it? How many times have you bought something quickly, only to decide later that the neckline isn’t right or the sleeves are too short? Make sure that you LOVE it in the store. A good way to decide is to walk away, maybe even into another store, and come back a little later and reassess.
2. Do I need it? Is it really true that a girl can never have too many jeans? By the looks of my closet, it is, but in the reality of this recession, it’s not. We have to pick and choose carefully these days.
3. Will it last? Is it quality? It is going to be out of style next season? It is best to invest in certain pieces that will last and then update those basics with more trendy items that won’t break the bank, like a scarf, chunky necklace, or some fun colorful flats.
